Getting Involved > Week Three, Day One
Introduce
  • Have a big banner of all the extra-curricular activities in the front of the room for the freshmen as they enter classroom.

  • Have students who are involved in certain activities come in to explain them to class.

  • Have FMPs talk about what activities they are involved in.

  • Ask freshmen what activities they plan on getting involved in.

  • Give reasons to join:

  1. Make friends

  2. Improve self-esteem (by being a part of something)

  3. Looks good on college applications (quality not quantity)

  4. Helps your organizational skills

  5. FUN

 
Interact

         Charades:

  1. Put activities on scraps of paper

  2. Have freshman pick one out

  3. Perform activity

Pictionary:

1.       Similar to charades except activity would be drawn

·        Yarn Toss

  1. form a circle and toss a ball of yarn to someone
  2. say their name as you toss and what activity or club you are planning on being involved with this year.
  3. Hold onto yarn – web that is formed could symbolize how all these different activities help to incorporate all students at Neuqua. You broaden your circle of friends, find out more about your interests, and become connected to more people at Neuqua.

·        M&M Game

  1. have students pick out 5 M&Ms
  2. go around room and have students list possible clubs/organizations/sports that they might want to become involved with.

·        Matching Game

  1. give half the class the name of a club and the other half a definition of the clubs.
  2. Have students find their match.
  3. Have the twosome explain to class their club and what it does.

 

Inquire
  • What clubs/organizations do you have an interest in and are there any concerns you have regarding them?

  • Give advice on whom to talk to regarding these activities.

  • Hand out activity book.

  • Explain how a student(s) can start up a new club. Give recent examples such as lacrosse.

  • Ask anyone if they have discovered a club that they did not know about before.

 

 

  • Share the activities you are familiar with or the one(s) that you sponsor
  • Assist in organizing the activity
